My Dead Lip

April 21, 2014 by John Russell Dunn Leave a Comment

Everything is healing as it should. Most everything.

The doctors are pleased with the way the bones have moved and how they’re settling in. There’s only one problem. I seem to have lost some touch sensation in my chin. I have a triangular area below the left side of my lower lip with no sensitivity to touch. The damage includes the inner surface of the lip, too. The reflexes that pull the lips away from the teeth aren’t working right. I frequently bite my lip now. And realizing that your lip is between your teeth is a very odd sensation, indeed. Especially when there’s no pain. It’s more worrisome than it sounds. I wonder what kind of damage I’ve been doing without knowing it. The doctors say that the sensation may come back as long as six months later. We’ll have to wait and see.

Simply Scrumptious

March 24, 2014 by John Russell Dunn Leave a Comment

I know scrumptious means wonderfully delicious, right? But what’s the etymology? I know a scrum is what happens when a rugby ball gets loose. So, could you call a Black Friday sale at Walmart ‘scrumptious?’ I guess. But only if there are black eyes and bruises.

Complacency

January 6, 2014 by John Russell Dunn Leave a Comment

Filter my impressions, O God. Condition my thinking. Both temper and empower my words. I don’t need an infusion, I need a replacement. I don’t need a touch, I need a detonation. I don’t need an encounter, I need an insurrection.

In the Chair

December 30, 2013 by John Russell Dunn Leave a Comment

I think highly of my dental team, but it’s hard to account for the emotional energy that dental work depletes. Even when there’s no pain, even when there’s no physical discomfort, the process is so intimate, so invasive, it’s sometimes hard not to want a nap (or a good cry) afterwards. This is probably especially true for introverts. Transitioning from drill-n-fill to regular activities takes more than just waiting for any anesthetic to wear off.

In other words, it’s possible to be a drooling fool in more than just the physical sense.

Random Access Memory

December 16, 2013 by John Russell Dunn Leave a Comment

I have random-access memory.

Some days, it seems entirely random whether I’ll be able to access my memory.

Facial surgery? I can take care of that for you.

November 18, 2013 by John Russell Dunn Leave a Comment

I can’t tell you how many men, after hearing about the bone re-arranging surgery I needed, offered to take care of all that bone breaking for me. One man advised me to go to the nearest tavern and start insulting people’s mothers.

Yup, that would take care of it.
