The dictionary tells us that the word advent means appearing.
But, like many words, it has a richer, more subtle denotative meaning.
To me, the word advent implies the beginning of a new way of doing things or the unveiling of an exquisite sculpture or a canvas painted by a master. It suggests the expenditure of enormous time and effort to share something that is finally complete, ready, and perfect.
We know that God’s plan to send a savior was from before the beginning. God would not create a people capable of choice without a plan for rescuing us from our choices.
In the season of Advent, we celebrate the unveiling of at least the leading edge of the Master’s plan.
