I had been told for years that I needed braces. Dentists always told me it would be necessary someday. I always assumed it was for purely cosmetic reasons. I knew I had an overbite and my teeth looked more like castle walls than the smooth pearly teeth of a model. But even as a teenager, I figured, if I wanted to improve my appearance, I’d get more mileage out of diet and exercise. Later, as an adult, I either figured I had outgrown such vanity or I thought it was hopeless. Besides, I couldn’t afford braces. Brace would cost more money than I’d ever spent on a car.
